‘Coiners’ is a serial graphic portrait project in which opposing and paradoxical symbols in an object are highlighted.
I use a penny as a main subject which as such has two contradicting values: a great man is depicted on one side, and a very low value on the other side. These presentations form opposites in which the past is stuck to the present, and the valuable to the cheap.
The two sides of the coin can never meet face to face, and are manipulated into their position. This division is reminiscent of today’s media, where the past seems manipulated and stuck to the present, and which is often contradictory. It highlights how traditional values change based on people’s general ideas about objects. For instance traditional values such as nobleness and liberty were seen as naive, and had obtained a sarcastic meaning.
I want to indicate that changeability can vitalise or change a fact or story, or make it disappear from our awareness. As such it reflects the way we present the news, and the way we talk about the world.
